Useful For
Useful in diagnosis of pernicious anaemia, where – 80% of patients demonstrate antibody positivity. A positive test in the presence of a megaloblastic anaemia makes pernicious anaemia a probable diagnosis. A negative test will help differentiate pernicious anaemia from other anaemias and Whipple’s disease. Positive antibody titres can also be seen in gastritis, gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, chronic thyroiditis, iron deficient anaemia, juvenile diabetes mellitus, idiopathic Addison’s disease and normal individuals.
