Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine
Container/Tube: Sterile screw-capped container with boric acid
For paediatric sample, collect container from NUH Microbiology Laboratory.
Volume: Adult: 20.0 mL (boric acid container)
Paeds container: 5.0 - 10.0 mL
Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL (send in sterile bottle without boric acid)
Collection Instructions:
- Indicate method of urine collection: Mid-stream, clean catch, catheterized, nephrostomy, others.
- Clean the genital area with clean water first. Do NOT use detergents or disinfectants.
MSU: Collect the midstream part of the urine into a sterile container with boric acid. Fill to the recommended volume.
Catheterized urine: Collect from the collection port (not from the bag) using aseptic technique and should only be submitted if patient has symptoms of urinary tract infection.
