Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Endocervical, urethral, rectal, eye swab
Container/Tube: eSwab, M40 transystem Amies agar transport media (for non-NUH patients)
Volume: Entire swab
Collection Instructions: Send to laboratory IMMEDIATELY after collection.
Rectal swab: Pass the tip of a sterile swab approximately 2.5 cm beyond the anal sphincter. Rotate the swab & withdraw it. Place swab in transport medium.

Useful For
Confirmation of gonorrhoea infection. If culture is positive, susceptibility testing results may be useful for guiding antibiotic treatment in patients who failed empiric therapy.

Unacceptable Condition
Samples from other sites are generally not suitable. Routine cultures may be ordered for sterile sites (e.g. blood, joint fluid) where invasive gonorrhoea is suspected.
