Specimen Requirements

Submit one of the following

Preferred
White sterile container

Specimen Type: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Container/Tube: Sterile, screw-capped container
Volume: 2.0 mL
Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL (adult); 0.5 mL (paediatric)
Collection Instructions: Lumbar puncture, VP shunt, Ommaya Reservoir. Do not inoculate CSF samples into BacT/Alert bottles.

Specimen Stability and Condition

Transport Condition Submit sample to lab immediately (ambient)
Refrigerate Acceptable up to 12 hours
Unacceptable Condition Frozen samples and CSF in borid acid or blood bottles
Special instructions Gram smear is included in this test

Methodology

Conventional Culture

Days and Times Performed

Monday through Sunday, TAT 2 - 3 days

Reference Interval

No bacterial growth after 2 days.

 

Critical Values: Clinician will be informed of positive CSF Gram smear or culture.
