Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Nails
Container/Tube: Specimen enclosed by filter paper in Plain Sterile Container
Specimen Volume: 2-5 mm; 1-3 pcs

Collection Instructions: 

1. Wipe the nail with 70% alcohol using gauze (not cotton).

2. Clip away a generous portion of the affected area.

3. Collect material or debris from under the nail.

 

Specimen Type: Hair
Container/Tube: Specimen enclosed by filter paper in Plain Sterile Container
Specimen Volume: 1-3 strands

Collection Instructions: 

1. Using forceps collect affected hairs with base of the shaft intact.

 

Specimen Type: Skin
Container/Tube: Specimen enclosed by filter paper in Plain Sterile Container
Specimen Volume: 1-3 pcs

Collection Instructions: 

1. Cleanse the affected area with 70% alcohol.

2. Gently scrape the surface of the skin at the active margin of the lesion, being careful to not draw blood.

Detection of dermatophytes in general (pan-dermatophyte*), and specifically Trichophyton rubrum.

 

*Dermatophytes in general include T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. interdigitale, T. tonsurans, T. schoeuleinii, T. violaceum, T. soudanense, T. verrucosum, T. erinacei, M. canis, M. audouinii, and E. floccosum.
